đź’ˇPuzzle #16

Black has an eventual checkmate in 3 moves can you find the move that starts it all?

âś…Solution

The mating sequence begins with Rh8+, and White has to play the move Bh3+ to block. Black has the move Qf2+. White’s only move is Kh1, and Black can play the very nice Rxh3#, and the game is over.

♟️Tip of the Week

It is easier to create mating sequences when multiple pieces are active in the position. Aligning all these working pieces together will make checkmate much easier to achieve.

🪶Chess History

Since the holidays are coming up, let’s look at one of the most famous games which was speculated to have been played around Christmas time “The Evergreen Game”. It was played between Adolf Anderssen and Jean Dufresne, Anderssen was one of the leading chess masters in the world at the time, and Dufresne was one of 1852 Anderssen’s students. Let’s look at this legendary game.

Black just played the move Ke8. Anderssen answered with the stunning move Bd7+, Black then had to play Kf8 and Anderssen achieved the difficult two-bishop checkmate with Bxe7#
